#19 - "Strutting and Fretting..."

Macbeth says that "Life is... a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more... a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."  Do you agree with Macbeth?  Explain.

Yes because if you think of it that way you live then die, seemingly for no reason.

I do agree with Macbeth. In life, time goes by slowly and ultimately leads up to our death. Macbeth explains how time is a way of bringing us closer towards death. Yet, while we’re still alive people spend their time on earth doing what they think is important when in reality once we die our life has little significance. During our life we make such a big deal out of everything we accomplish, but once we die how significant really was it? Unless you leave a huge impact in history like signing the Declaration of Independence it’s highly unlike you’ll life will be remembered by future generations.

i kinda of agree becuase it seems like his is saying that everyone has their period of glory and then they fade out.

I do agree with Macbeth partially. When one is dead, they are remembered by a lot of people at first. However, once a lot of time has passed, more people begin to forget the lives of those who died as the world changes past them. However, I do not agree that life is pointless. Though they may not be remembered, a person's impact can last forever.

I agree with him to an extent, but I think is depends on what you believe. If you don't believe in God, or heaven and hell, then life would be just an hour on the stage, and then it's over. If you do believe in God, and heaven and hell, then your life does mean something, and ultimately decides where you go when you die.

I do agree with Macbeth because in the end not only one person can make a difference in their life. We may try to change things in our world but in the end we will all die and be forgotten. Even celebrities are meaningless. They don't change lives they just influence them. So I think that we live our lives to please ourselves and then we die. So we mostly mean nothing to anyone but ourselves.

XxKaraXx said...

According to what Macbeth said, he states that life is meaningless. I disagree because Macbeth screwed up his own life which resulted in death. Life is beautiful if you want it to be.

Yes I do agree with Macbeth, becasue we are born, we live our life and then we die. So if we knowe we are going to die why do we try so hard so in the end it will mean nothing.

Tory Guardino said...

I agree with Macbeth's statement because life really is just something that happens and then ends. When a person dies, nothing happens. When a person is born, nothing happens. Although some lives may have more of an impact on the world than others, most people just live and die, nothing special about it.

Jessica C said...

Yes, I completely agree with Macbeth. Life is just pointless. We like to believe we have a purpose, but are we really impacting this world? If everyone felt the same way that Macbeth feels nothing in the world would get done. Nobody would want to do anything and then the whole human race would fall. So maybe we do have a purpose. Our purpose is to keep all these pointless lives going. I guess you could say that's enough of a purpose.

I would say I do agree with Macbeth. My reasoning would be because the main idea behind what Macbeth is saying is that people have a limited span of time here on Earth. When they come of age, they show the world what kind of person they are and what qualities/talents they possess that may be beneficial to others. When they are "heard no more," that means they have passed away, and have nothing else to offer due to the obvious fact they are dead. The process continues by a new generation of people being born, and further down the road, coming of age where they are capable of "strutting and fretting their hour upon the stage" or simply showing what they have to offer in terms of capabilities.

I agree with Macbeth because it is true what we do doesn't matter seeing taht it's all going to end anyway when our hour is over.

I do agree. You can however make your life so people in the future remember how you had lived. You can live life to the fullest. You are going to die but you can make it worth while.

I agree with macbeth, starting from when we are born, we try so hard to stay alive aslong as we can, eventhough we will die no matter what. It seems pointless to try, in the end our efforts are fruitless.

Michael D said...

I don't totally agree with Macbeth. Some people do make a difference while they are alive and people will remember them.

BrennenV said...

Yes I agree with Macbeth because it seems like one person can't have an impact on anything. It's only a group of people that could possibly change anything. We are born and then we die. Our purpose is to keep the population of humans existing, but we, on our own, can't make a big impact on anything.

I disagree with Macbeth because although we will all die one day, dying serves no purpose so everyone should make the best out of their life before it comes to an end.

I agree on Macbeth's view on life. Most people live in this world not being know world wide. And then when we die, nothing happens. When famous people are living, they have thir moment of glory, or Macbeth calls it their hour upon the stage. Then when they die, life stil goes on for the rest of us and nothing still happens.

I agree with Macbeth to a certain extent. People live their life and accomplish great things. They are usually not recognized until they die. After time goes on, that person is forgotten and all the great things they have accomplished were forgotten as well. I do not think life is pointless. People make their life whatever they want it to be and it is up to that person and how full they choose to life their own life.

I some what agree with Macbeth because he is saying that life is meaningless. You live and then you die and your heard no more.

Yes, I do agree with Macbeth. Ultimately our lives will just mean nothing. Everyone in the world is so concerned about their life and what their doing in it, but when you think about it how much does it really count? By the time we die, everything we accomplished and made a big deal out of will mean absolutely nothing. Most of the time, no matter how hard a person tries to make a difference it will most likely not even matter and completely be forgotten.

Gianaa said...

Yes, I do agree with Macbeth because if you think about 'life' itself we really have no purpose but only to wait just die. But once we die no one will care for us anymore or even remember us, because we have no significance.

Andre V. said...

I somewhat agree with Macbeth because, of the fact that life is short. Though, I do not believe that life is meaningless, people can impact the world in a number of ways wether it is a small or big impact. We can all learn from each other and view life differently. It all depends on the person, if they want to change the world, they can.

Kaitlyn said...

I agree with Macbeth because there are some idiots in life that you will come across, who will do nothing with their life and they wont signify anything really. I don’t agree when he says that life is a poor player and when people talk, no one hears them. There are many very important and intellectual people that can make a difference in life and can have an impact on people.

I dont agree with Macbeth. I think that life is more than just living and then dying. I think everyone has a purpose in life and life's what you make of it. I think that even after death people are still important because most of the time they will be remembered by someone and the things they did that influenced other people will be remembered.

People create purposs and if you think life is nothing then yea you have a point in the long run but to the ones around you life is so much more. if it was pointless then why do we even bother.

I ABOSLUTLY DO NOT AGREE with this quote and I feel that this is a major summary of how pathetic society is today. This quote can go two ways though either you are forgoten or your name will live for eternity. This quote really shows how pathetic society is today and has been in the past and how it will continue till the human race is no more. This quote just screams "I have no poin in life im just gona die anyways but ill still be rembered by everyone" WRONG you will be rembered for a brief amount of time if your lucky due to greif not glory. People who do nothing in life get nothing out of life but are to neieve to realize this till its to late to change it. Even the people who think there doing something that is going to get them rembered are WRONG. For example people who go to war, Historie dosnt rember soldiers or winers or looser historie rembers only those who were great and had the power among all the rest history only rembers the greatest. Those people in socety will live their life then die and will be forgoton because they didnt do anything to be rembered. I think machiavelian did this the best by stating that you have to do anything possible to achieve greatness and power. To many people in society pass this up givng up before they start because they break my first rule to succsess and greatness which is in order to achieve greatness you need to be set up for greatness which is what so many people fail to do today because they start off with a bad attitude and give up before it begins which is pathetic and i refues to pitty people who dont try to achieve greatness .But if you are great you didnt waste" hour apon the stage" then your name is rembered for enterity. Only the people who are richious either good or bad are rembered. Only the people who were the greatest are rembered Pacaso, Micheal Jordan, Einstein all the greatest above the rest so they will live long past they physicaly die. The only way to achieve this imortaliy is through hard work and detication. This is were society is so wrong today that people just go through the motions or just play video games for ever instead of hitting the book or what ever your niche is so they deserve to be long forgot and thats how i live my life everyday to strive for greatness so i have my impact and can live for enterity. Mankind is constantly haunted by the vastness of eternity, and so we ask ourselves will our actions acho across the centuries? will strangers hear our names long after we are gone and wonder who we were or how bravely we fought to work our way to richedness and infomy. That why this quote is the worst quote i have ever read and is exactly the opposite of how i live my life cause that is sad and pointless.

No, I do not agree. I think people can be a bore stupid and reckless with their decisions, yet do have more faith and hope in humanity then Shakespeare did when he wrote that line. People chose to “Strut and Frett” but we don’t have to follow those people off a cliff and make nothing out our life like they did.

Wow, Alex, sounds like Macbeth's soliloquy has struck a nerve! Well done! I agree with you to a point: it seems as if a lack of motivation is prevalent among your peers; however, sometimes it's just an issue of maturity; kids blossom at different times, and sometimes that time is after the opportunities of high school. Remaining positive and optimistic about the future is a key component to disproving Macbeth's point of view. Yes, Macbeth is in the pit of despair at that moment in the play, and we need to be able to empathize with him a bit (catharsis), but I agree that his words are not a very good philosophy of life. Again, well done!

Ya, i agree with Macbeth, life is full of idiots, and life is long, everyone is born and then dies, everyone has a prime point in their life, and then it fades.

AidanK said...

I do not agree with Macbeth. This is because I think that as life goes on it leads to death. Macbeth says this while he was having his issues with him about to die. This quote signifies that life is meaningless to him and that it is about a waste of time to him before he ends up dieing in the end of the book.

jordanf30 said...

I do not agree with this quote because like Alex said people who do nothing with their lives but watch TV and play video games all day will never be remembered because they gave up too easily and didn’t want to try. However I believe if people actually tried and put their hearts and souls into doing things that will better the community and the people around them and actually try to do something with their lives, than they too can be remembered for the good things that they did to help others.

Marisa said...

I disagree with Macbeth. Life is not pointless. Depending on your religion, many people believe that there is a reason why God created you and brought you to earth. Some see it as the opportunity to go to heaven, reincarnated etc. I think everyone’s opinion on life depends on their fate. The choices made and the actions taken from a person ultimately affects their view. Some people live life just to make an impact on others or to fight for what they believe in; they want to be remembered. Others make wrong decisions which lead them into a state where only pessimism triumphs and they simply do not care in any religious aspect: whether it’s going to Hell or not. In Macbeth’s situation he had reached the end of his life and was clearly in some sort of depression. He wasn’t able to last as King so he gave up on himself. In society today I think more people agree with this quote than disagree with it. So many people lose their life and any of its potential to drugs, alcohol, crimes or just bad decisions in general; they don’t think before they act. It is upsetting that society acts that way today because everyone has the chance to live a great life and make what they can out of it by making themselves and the people around them happy.

No I do not agree with this quote because like Alex said if you do nothing with your life but sit around and watch TV all day then you will not be remembered in history. I agree with Macbeth in terms of the long term, but not in terms of the short term. In the short term, humans have such a huge impact on the planet and on each other. We are one species that has complete and total control over much of the land on Earth. Dinosaurs were so many different species, and many of them were giants compared to us. However, although dinosaurs were around for much longer than we have been, they were many different species and they did not exert nearly as much control over the planet as humans. However, in the scope of things, we are nothing. If and when humans go extinct, the Earth will most likely erase any and all evidence that we ever existed over the course of thousands of years. After thousands and thousands of years, there will eventually be very few traces that we ever existed. Also, our planet is so tiny compared to the rest of the universe. Our world, compared to the entire universe, is like a tiny grain of sand compared to the sun, and maybe even relatively smaller than that. So yes, the human race is great for a time, but only in a relatively small area compared to the rest of the universe and probably only for a relatively short time.

I don't agree with Macbeth. Everyone's life has some sort of effect, no matter how big. We all effect eachother's lives. Weihter we will be remebered due to greif or glory is up to us, but there'll always be a small group that remembers you regardless.- Jarred C.

I do not agree because a person can leave behind a legacy that is remembered for a long time. The actions, defeats, and accomplishments of an individual can affect anyone or even everyone and should not be over looked.

As you know, I agree with Macbeth 100%. As humans are living on this Earth, they believe themselves to be so special and important. We try so hard to achieve something throughout our lifetime and all we wish is to succeed. But the question becomes is it even worth it? We live and we die "signifying nothing." Sometimes people get so caught up with the little things in life that really serve no importance by the time they are no longer present. Macbeth makes a very good point in his soliloquy.

I agree with the quote by Macbeth. He is saying we go through life and as time goes by we are just getting closer to death. Throughout our lives we have our moments of glorh and triumph but after time our story is nolonger heard. This is due to the fact that we die and our memories die with us because we are not here to tell of them.

I agree with what macbeth says. He means that people get nervous and always fret about what is going on in their personal life, ultimately leading to our death. But after your death, your life never had a huge impact on history unless you do something huge then your life could be meant for nothing.

Macbeth is saying that we go along life trying our best to be our best so what? we can die and do nothing about it. I don't agree with him because you do it so we can go to heaven or an afterlife.

I think that what Macbeth said is true for some people, but false for others. Yes, all of us do slowly live our life up until our death. However, depending on how we live our lives and what we chose to do with them, will decide if we are "heard" after our death. If we make an impact on other people's lives, people will most likely continue to remember and talk about you after your death. If you go about your life doing nothing, you will be remembered by very few.

i compleatly agree with what shakespeare is saying. The human life is insenificant, every day we fail to see the bigger picture, believing that out individual lives are the most important and special thing on the planet, when in reality our intire existanse means absoulutly nothing, when the human race is extinct, all of existance will go on and time will ceace to exist (as time is a man made thing,) and we will be as good as never having existed. However this does not mean we shouldent enjoy our lives, as we are given feelings and thoughts.

I understand where Macbeth is coming from but i don't agree. It may seem that time only brings us closer to death but i think if you spend that time wisely and live life to the fullest your life will have had some significance to you and the people that you have effected during your life time.

Alina said...

I agree with Macbeth and his famous quote because all time does is eventually leading up to our deaths and in life nothing we ever holds great significance. Even though some people make history it will still be forgotten one day and the more and more time passes from that even the less we as humans care and remember. We spend our time on Earth doing what we think is most important in life when it all comes down to nothing because eventually we lose everything we’ve ever strived for and achieved along with losing our lives. The chances of being remembered in life and creating a huge impact is very slim so most of us just die without great remembrance unless it’s our family or close friends. By: Alina B

When Macbeth says that line in the play I feel like he is trying to say that in every person’s life, they live for a short period then they die off and left to be forgotten. I disagree with that statement because even if we aren’t a Jesus Christ, Alexander the Great, George Washington, or even an Abraham Lincoln, our actions could affect others which could have a domino effect upon the people and eventually change the world. Yea Macbeth is kind of right, which that we might not remember everyone in history by name but we will always remember them by their actions and how it affected society.
