#9 - Character Judgement...
At the end of the novella, do you sympathize with Dr. Jekyll? Do you feel sorry for him? Is he still a likable character? Or do you say, "Good Riddance!" He gets what he deserves? What are the reasons for your opinion of Dr. Jekyll? What might you have done had you been in Dr. Jekyll's situation?

Dr. Jekyll is a likable character. Do i feel sorry for him, no. Dr. Jekyll is an intresting character but we don't learn much about him.
At the end of the novel i feel sorry for dr.jekyll, even though he is a slightly less likable charecter. he was a good person and could'nt control what hide was doing
I still like Jekyll because as he is described in the book he is the most kindhearted and respected man in London. I feel sorry for him because of what the whole business with Hyde has put him through. though we don't know a whole lot about him I still have respect for him.
It's sort of difficult to answer this question because I still don't know exactly what happened to Dr. Jekyll. Do I feel sorry for him? Yes in a way because he seems like a good person but could not control what was happening to him. I feel that Dr. Jekyll was being taken over by Mr. Hyde and he could not stop it. If I was in Dr. Jekyll's situation I would probably do the same thing because back in that time period you would most likely be murdered or a scientific project.
I don't feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because he should not have been messing with the chemicals and doing bad things to himself. Dr. Jekyll gets what he deserved because he put everything on himself. If I in Dr. Jekyll's situation I would have done the same thing because I would't want anyone to know or hurt me.
For situation A:
Almost every Thursday night, I am asked by at least 10 or so friends if I can help them with their AP World homework. Often times, instead of going to bed at s reasonable time I stay up late to help them understand the questions and answers from the homework. I think it is the right thing to help others by staying up late to help them with their homework, while I may not need to, I feel like it's the right thing. However, in doing this I am sacrificing valuable sleep.
In the debate whether it is easier to chose choice A or B, it is uncontrovertibly choice B. Alexander of Macedonia once said in response to an insubordinate general " it has come the time in which we must choice between what is right and what is easy," a quote that supports the fact that choice B is easier to make. What Alexander the Great is saying is that it is hard for any man/woman to chose others over themselves. In fact we almost (well the majority of us) always make self serving decisions. If people did not chose the to make self serving decisions then there would not have been any, land disputes, no one would sue anyone for ridiculous claims, people would not cheat or plagiarize, there would not have been corrupt aristocrats, and history would, to say the least, have been extremely boring.
i feel sorry for dr.jekyll he couldnt help his drug problem with this potion continusly going back and forth from hyde to jekyll he was basically a drug addict who needed more and more
i do feel sorry for mr jekyll beacause he couldnt help his drug problem, and him fighting evil. in dr jekylls shoe's i would of accepted i was hyde and tried to be a better person.
I don't feel bad for Jekyll because he knew what he was doing to himself. Obviously he wanted to be a different person. I think hes likable because his situation is kind of a real life scenario. In real life people always want to be someone else. I think he got what he deserved because he wanted to change so that's what he got. If I was in Jekyll's situation I would have tried to get more drugs or just deal with it.

In the book we are reading I don't have sympathy for Dr. Jekyll. I don't sympathy for him because he was very sketchy when he was talking to people who wants to help him. He is being sketchy in the sense that he didn't tell Utterson the full truth about himself.
At the end of the novella i still believe Dr.Jekyll is a good character. I do not feel any sorrow to him for what hes done. I believe that he gets what he deserves. The reason for my opinon of Dr.Jekyll is that i believe that no one should do drugs especially how much he was doing them and the bad things he did while he did them. What i would of done in Dr.Jekyll's situation is to go get help with his problem.
I don't feel bad for Jekyll because he knew what he was doing to himself by trying this experiment. Obviously he wanted to be a different person and was not happy with himself. I do think Jekyll is a likable character because his situation is relatable to many people. Sometimes if people are not happy with themselves or their lives, they turn to drugs as a way of avoiding their problems. I think Jekyll got what he deserved because he wanted to change himself and he was successful in doing so. If I was in Jekyll's situation I would have not tried drugs. I would have gone for help or just changed my life style of living so I would fit my personal standards of what I felt like I should be and act as a person without hurting myself or the people around me.

I think it is better off without him. He was just a bad seed. His experiment backfired on him. If i was him i would have turned myself in, or i would have tryed to stop turning into Hyde.

At the end of the book i do sympathize for Jekyll. Ill tell you this because he was put in a rare situation. He was a wealthy kid who grew up right and his goal was to get the evil out of him. He logged it and it happened to turn out that the evil took over. He may have been persuaded and fell into it but his overall goal was to rid it in the long run. ALso its not like all of us would have been like done with it after the first time either. Its human nature and his situation brought him into a rough patch. He is a likable character based on Lanyon's, Utterson's and Poole's description when he is in good health and untainted by Hyde. I might have in his situation had the lab exempt of any chemicals that lets me change to Hyde but i don't doubt it would not be as easy as saying it.
At the end of the novel I do sympathize with Dr. Jekyll because i can understand how one person may make a mistake and it snowballs into something much bigger and more sinister. I also think that he is a likable character because he seem like the type of guy that would be a great party host I don't know why. If i was Dr. Jekyll's situation depending on how far I was in the book I would have probably still kept taking the drug because I would have been addicted to it. On the other hand, if I was towards the end of the book and I had the option to kill myself I would because eventually the police are going to catch me. I also know that you can't run from your mistakes but it can't follow me to the next life.
-George B
I do feel a little sorry for Dr. Jekyll and he is a likable character because he is a good person deep down but he changes when he takes the drug. I think he was really only tring to do good but the drug didnt turn out the way he wanted. I am not sure what I would have done but probably not what he did.
I feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because he didn't know the effects of the drug beforehand. He had no idea that he would become addicted to it and be forced to be evil. It's hard to fight an addiction, and since nobody was aware of his, he had no support from his friends. They didn't know he had a problem, so they couldn't help him. We see this occuring even in society today.
I sympathize a little for Dr. Jekyll. I think he is a likeable character. I feel sorry for him because he didn’t like the person he was and wanted to change. To change, he created a potion that in the end he got addicted to. Part of me doesn’t feel sorry for him because he continued to take this drug and become addicted to it. In some way he does get what he deserves because he became addicted, but you could also look at it in a way because he wanted to change. If I was in Dr. Jekyll's position, I would have done the same thing and experimented, but i wouldn’t have taken more and more of the potion and become addicted.
I feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because he was trying to do a good thing and test his hypothesis, but it ended up failing. I still think he's a likable character, it's Hyde that we don't like not him. Like many addicts, Jekyll suffers from addiction, and if i was in his position i would have went to other scientists or doctors and asked for help.
I don't feel particularly bad for Jekyll, since he put himself in the situation he's in. I also wouldn't say he's a likable character, seeing that most of everything he does has to do with Mr. Hyde. I don't think anyone deserves what happened to Jekyll, but I do not care for his character.
I don't feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll because he shouldn't of messed with chemicals and kept doing it. Even if it made him turn into this whole other person and he felt like he could of done anything, he still did the wrong thing. I think he deserves what happened to him. If I was in Dr. Jekyll's situation, I would of never taken it in the first place.
I do feel sympathy for Dr. Jekyll. He was described in the novella as one of the most well-liked and respected men in London. I don't think such a nice man like Jekyll deserved what happened to him. I believe he is still a likable character. The reason why I feel this way about Dr. Jekyll is because, he was a good person but he decided to make one bad choice, just like most of us make. If I was in Dr. Jekyll's situation, I would have not experimented with using chemicals and risking my life becoming Hyde.
At the end of the novella I don’t sympathize or feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll got what he wanted all along, which was to be evil. Maybe I would have felt bad if the potion had been on accident, but Jekyll wanted for it to happen. Dr. Jekyll’s case is a prime example of being careful for what you wish for. In the end Jekyll got to do what he wanted, which was to be evil without consequences. Once he began to abuse this privilege he got what he deserved, which was to uncontrollably change. If I had been in Dr. Jekyll’s situation I honestly don’t know what I would do. I would probably just stay Hyde if that what it came down to and I would just move to a different city and start over fresh. I wouldn’t have risked taking the pure potion and dying, so I would just remain the rest of my life as Hyde.
Dr. Jekyll was a tough character to choose whether you liked or disliked him. Personally I think hes just between because of his choices in life. I like him because he trys to get rid of the bad person within him, but I feel like, in a way, he fed Mr. Hyde. I sympathize with Dr. Jekyll but not entirley. If I was in his situation, after taking the drug, I would have rid of myself right away because I wouldnt want to continue hurting people. But Jekyll was different because he had hyde still inside him, though he was able to seperate him from himself at times. I think they were always one.
At the end of the book, I do sort of feel sorry for Jekyll. He had to figure out some sort of way to pleasure the evil inside of him. I think that it was smart to create a person to satisfy the hatefulness inside of him. I think he took it a little to far though. Jekyll became very dependant on Hyde. It started to get out of control. He started to change without the drug. I don't feel sorry for him about that though.
At the end of the book, I did feel sorry for him a little bit. I still liked him because he's still interesting. He brought it on himself, and got in over his head. He didn't deserve to die, but he should of got a lesser punishment, because he did not have 100 percent control over Hyde.
If I was Jekyll, I would have told someone what I was doing so if anything went wrong, they could help. I would have also planned better.
At the end of the novella I did not sympathize Dr.Jekyll. Everyone in society has an evil side and most decide to hide it and not show it. What makes Dr. Jekyll think it's okay to add another evil person to the world? Dr. Jekyll was just being selfish by making Mr. Hyde. He made Mr. Hyde so that he didn't have to ruin his reputation in society, which is no excuse. I think Dr. Jekyll deserved to die because of his misbehavior. I am in Dr. Jekyll's situation aren't I? I'm a person in society who has to keep there evilness hidden. In Dr. Jekyll's I keep my bad side hidden like most should do.
Dr. Jekyll is just a character in a novella who represents human beings. I find him not to be a likable character, only because he resembles who we are, which is evil. Everyone has some form of evil inside of them, no matter who they are or where they come from. In this case, he is nothing special to me. I think Jekyll handled his situation badly. If I were in his position, I would have sucked up the need to do evil like most of the world does. He might have been clever, but he was selfish. I believe he does get what he deserves because he went against human nature. Life is about being you; not somebody else. I sympathize with Dr. Jekyll though, only because I know what it's like to feel the way he did. However, I am able put those feelings away and deal with it; something he neglected to try.
At the end of the novel Jekyll doesnt deserve any sympathy because he was the reason there was harm done ecause he took th drug to became Hyde. He is a likable character but people dont trust him. He does get what he diserves because he took the drug to have people get hurt or torchered. I would tell everyone I was Hyde and if i dont get that same drug i woul always be Hyde and never Jekyll again.
at the end of the novel i don't sympathize with Jekyll. i also do not feel sorry for him, because everyone has evil in them, and unfortunately Dr. Jekylls was more then most peoples. He could have tried and controlled himself but he couldn't the evil was taking over.
Ya, i guess at the end of the novella i do feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because the point of the experiment was to rid all the evil out of him, even though the experiment made him more evil and didn't work Dr. Jekyll still had good intentions at the start of the experiment. It just went beyond his control. if i was in Jekyll situation i would probably do the same thing he did.
Even though he was doing this for good intentions, he gave into an addiction. He kept on wanting to do bad things as Mr. Hyde. So, no, I guess I don't sympathize for Dr. Jekyll because he gave into an evil thing
At the end of the novella I feel sorry for Mr. Jekyll because of what Hyde had put him through. I thnk he is still a likeable character, but shouldnt have gotten involved with the drug in the first place. I think palced in the same situation as Jekyll I would have done the same thing.
Yes i feal sorry for Dr.Jekyll because he was a good person who just wanted to eliminate evil and by trying evil overcomed him and took his life.
At the end of the novella, I guess I do sympathize with Jeckyll because he could have lived a longer and happier life with many friends. I feel sorry for him because he was addicted to a drug that caused his death. However, I do think he deserves what he got because he had many opportunities to stop taking the drug and then it was too late and the drug took over his life. If I were Dr. Jeckyll, I would have stopped taking the drug once I realized it was beginning to be too much to handle.
I dont feel bad for dr. jekyll at all because it was he who chose to become evil and do evil things. I still think he is a likable character still.
At the end of the novella, I do feel sympathy for Dr. Jekyll indeed. He was addicted to the potion he created necessary to make the transformation happen. I feel he is still a likeable character, but others may think differently. This is my opinion of Jekyll because he wasn't a bad person necessarily, he just got a bad break and life for him took a nosedive. Also, if I were in his situation, I probably would have tried to deal with it the best I could and hope for the best possible outcome resulting from what I am trying to do to help myself.

I dont feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because it was he who chose how to live his life by being evil. I still find that he is an likable chacter still.
At the end of the novel, i do not sympathize Dr.Jekyll. This is because, i believe everyone has evil & good inside of them, but him on the other hand only really has a side of evil. He put himself into the situation that he was in, so he would of had to get himself out. The drug has took over his life so he got what he deserved. I would of handled this situation so much different and hadn't took a drug.
at the end of the novel, i do not sympathize Dr.Jekyll. He knew what he was doing and knew that he did something bad. he chose to keep on going with it and not let it go so he got what he deserved. i would have handled the situation alot different by not taking the drug and know it was gonna end up so much worse.
At the end of this novella, I do not feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll. I don't think that he should have been trying to make himself a different identity just to be able to do evil things. If I was in Jekyll's situation, I probably would have done the same thing because I would not want to be doing evil without even knowing what my other identity was doing.
I do feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll and sympathize with him because he made a mistake and put himself into a hole that he couldn't get out of. I also empathize with him to some extent because I know what it feels like to make a mistake and have to pay for it no matter what I try to do to get out of it. I can't think of any examples, I just know what it feels like. I still think Dr. Jekyll is a likable character because he made a mistake and tried to reverse the effects of it. Jekyll is not really evil because he didn't intend for the experiment to go the way it did. He intended to get rid of the evil in him by separating it from the good in him, not bring out the evil in himself. If I was in Dr. Jekyll's situation, I probably would have tried to reverse the effects of the experiment like he did, but it would be in vain because there would be no way to stop Mr. Hyde.
At the end of the novella I dont feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because even though he was possibly a good person he still trampled over a girl and killed a man. everyone has a bad side to them and they let it free by getting into some sort of trouble but murder is never acceptable or should be understood. I do not feel sorry for him at all because since he comitted murder by choice and just because the circumstances didnt work out to his advantage he chose to take his own life. In the beginning I thought he was a likable character since he was intelligent and respectable but at the end of the book I dont percieve him as that anymore. Something that I would have done differently is that I wouldnt commit murder but maybe cause some havoc in town but nothing major that would cause the police to be after me.

At the end of the novella, I don't feel bad for Dr. Jekyll because he brought it about himself in the situation he was in. I wouldn't really see him as a likable character only because everything he did throughout the book was evil. Even though he wanted evil, it made him look like a bad person when he really wasn't. I don't think he deserved to be killed, but I think that he should have been punished in another way to show what he was doing was wrong. If I was in Jekyll's situation, I probably would've stopped taking the drug after I saw the results of using it.
I do sympathize with Jekyll because his intention on accidentally creating Hyde was just, but he fell into temptation and that made me lose sympathy for him a little. However when his last judgment came he did the right thing in destroying his evil alter ego. If I were in Jekyll's position I would have done the same thing, because even though he loved him like a son the evil he spread was to malevolent to let him live.
At the end of the book I felt sorry for Dr. Jekyll. Throughout the book Utterson would always say that Jekyll is a great man. Then he had turned strange. The main reason some people might think of Jekyll as a bad person because of his other personality as Hyde. I would have not done as many bad things as Hyde would have done at all maybe do better things not things that make it worse
I sympathize Jekyll still because his intentions were not to create the evil that he did. Jekyll just wanted to temporarily live a double life. However, he stated to get addicted which caused him to lose control of his experiment. Jekyll did not intend to do any wrong or any harm, however he did and it led to his death.
At the end of the novella i do not sympathize for Dr. Jekyll at all. I also do not feel sorry for him because he made the wrong choice. Also because early on in his "shape shifting" he could have stopped. He knew exactly what was going on but he liked his options and he proceeded to take the potion and become Hyde. He gets what he deserves because if he didn't like being him self so much he doesn't deserve the life he had as Jekyll. He did not appreciate his life as Jekyll so he there for did not deserve it.
I do not feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll. Also he still isnt a likable charachter. He definetly gets what he deserves. This is because he created Hyde and it is his fault. If i was in his situation I wouldnt of even made Hyde. So I do not have any simoathy for Dr. Jekyll
I dont feel bad for jekyll at all he got what he deserved. Thats what too much power and greed will get you. He for me is an unlikeable character because I don't like those kinds of people. If I was Jekyll I would have tried to control the power he had and not let it get the best of me.
While Dr. Jekyll was a likeable character, I really felt no sympathy toward him in the end. I feel he really got what he deserved for subjecting himself to his own ability to be evil and for tampering with the laws of nature.
I don't necessarily sympathize him, I just feel like "He got what he deserved," or "He had what was coming to him." He experimented with being a pure evil figure, and that is what happened when he went too far with it.
I do not sympathize with Dr. Jekyll. I never liked his character. Although he was struggling with the transformations, he was the one who created the potion. He got what he deserved. If I was Dr. Jekyll, I would have gotten rid of it once I realized the harm that the transformation can cause.
I do not feel sorry for Dr. Jekyll because he did it to himself. I think that he was a cool character because he was very interesting and you didn't know what he was doing next. I think this because he diserved it for drinking the potion in the first place.
After i was done reading the book i felt really terrible for Dr.Jekyll i don't think he deserved to die at all for his mistakes, he should have been punished for the murder of that official, but i don't think him dieing was appropriate.
I sympathize with the real Dr. Jekyll, and feel pity on the evil one. A likeable character yes, even with his warped mind. I feel sorry for any character like that. – Even both sides of his personality after taking the poison had no control and were addicts. In his situation I would have been powerless just like him. I’d hope to be stronger then he yet to start with he was a genius and I’m just a girl in high school. Maybe I’d have less evil but I hope no experiment like that could or would ever been done if possible.
