#7 - Jekyll & Hyde
How, when, where, or why have you heard these names in the past? Most of us have run across them in some form, but few are familiar with the actual story. From cartoons to Broadway to a particular Manhattan restaurant, Jekyll & Hyde has emerged as a cultural icon both here and in its native United Kingdom. Why might this be the case?

I think its funny that this is one of your blog topics because I just went to the Jekyll & Hyde restaurant in the city this past weekend. I didnt really know anything about it but from going to the restaurant, im sensing it has something to do with mysteies. The restaurant was like a haunted house because there were skeletons, mummies and other creepy objects. I think I have also heard the name on an Aurthur episode when I was little. I only really remember this because they made a song out of it. I think the story of Jekyll & Hyde is an important one and thats why it pops up in different places. I myself am unaware of the story and background and am looking forward to learning about it.

I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde before but i cant remember where. I think its about a professor that's one way and turns into a completely different person. I think its a icon because mostly everyone has a image of Jekyll and Hyde in their head.

I have heard about Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when i was a little kid. I remember wathing it on and episode of Scooby-Doo. When Scooby and Shaggy had to take part in a race of epic porportions with the worlds most feared monsters like Bigfoot, Frankenstien etc. I think people even as far as the united Kingdom has heard of this story because of the same reason why people as far as Vietnam have heard about The Beatles. I think that the book is so popular that its been spread around the world.
Ive never herd of Jekyll and Hyde before but to me it sounds like a very important name of some comany or a bussines store. Im shure i will see the name preaty soon because of this blog. To me its like vocabulary after you learn a new word you always seem to hear it in one way or another.

i have allways known about jekyll and hyde but i never reely looked in to it it is a prominient staple in the english culture almost like here in the u.s you hear frankinstein you autimaticly think oh monster (whitch is odd because merry shelly was germin) jekyll and hyde are that to them i was made aware of the storie when i saw the movie league of extraordinary gentelmen and my intrest has been peaked ever since and i was actualy excited when i saw we were going to be reading it
I remember Jekyll & Hyde came up in an Aurthur episode and there was a song that was really catchy. and i remember seeing a movie about it but ive never read the book. I think it's popular because it was a good book, i geuss ill find out.
I hear this when ever i am with my cousion because he is always having moodswings. One minute shes crying and being mean to everyone then next minute she is so nice to everyone. The reason that this might have spred so much and to say many places because so many people probley know someone that is like the caracter in the book.
I first heard of Jekyll and Hyde from a movie I saw when I was a little kid called The Pagemaster. It was a terrible movie about how this one kid goes to a library and meets three book genres; fantasy, horror, and adventure. The horror book is paired with a scene from Jekyll and Hyde. I've also been to the restaurant in the city, Jekyll and Hyde's. From what I remember it's all about a transformation from someone who's good to someone who's evil. I think it has a emerged as a cultural icon because it is easy to understand and a good concept.

i think that just by going to restaurant recently it has something to do with mysteries or maybe a haunting a person. The name of the story itself also sounds very attracting to people which may be the reason why it is a cultural icon

I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde because I have been to the restaurant in the city. I guess the reason the story has spread so much to places such as the UK is because the story is very good or it has a good message at the end.
I have seen a play of Jekyll and Hyde at the Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts and I know the story of Jekyll and Hyde, but I don't fully remember it. I really like this story and I really look forward to reading it. I think it is so famous and well known because it has a plot that was thought out very cleverly and it is somewhat of a horror story. It is very dramatic and intense. It also has good themes and a great story. I really look forward to seeing if it will be as good as I think it will be.
I think that with time, certain pieces of literature, movies, art, tv shows, popular people (actors, politicians, presidents, ect.), anything that we create now, eventually becomes part of our collective human antiquity. Think of things that have been absorbed into our global culture, the Mona Lisa, the Beatles, George Washington, ect. The point is that no matter where you live (well considering we are referring to world powers, not third world nations) we all share some knowledge. The same thing that happened to the Mona Lisa has happened to literature too.
I think that we, as humans are lazy and almost always take the easy route. Instead of coming up with new, personally, and genuine ways to describe things, we use other interpretations of certain lessons/messages/teachings/values/expressions. Its why pick-up lines, song quotes, even movie/book/tv show quotes are used so much in our society. We like the way people have, in the past, described things so we just use their explanations. Its efficient and effective to use their thoughts as a vehicle to express ours.
I think that the lesson/messages in Jekyll & Hyde have become part of this. Its easier to associate with the public, by using a popular symbol, then creating a genuine one. Humans all get the popular ones, and in marketing corporations usually use them for that reason. Jekyll & Hyde gives people certain feelings, or brings up messages/lessons, or allows people to associate with it. People like to associate with things, we like feeling part of something bigger (want evidence? Look at facebook groups, sport teams, clubs, cults, fraternities, and sororities.) And that is the reason it has emerged as a cultural icon, people can associate with it.
i have heard these names in the past in movies and the restaurant.I believe its its an icon now because mostly everyone knows about Jekll and hyde
Jekyll & Hyde is some type of resturant. My grandparents always talk about a restuant that they went to in the city. My grandma said that there was a mystery behind it that noone can figure out. She said its either a good one or a bad one.
I have heard these names from many cartoons in the past, and many things that actually relate to the novel its self. This might be the case because it is such a famous book that you can relate so much of modern life to it.
I have actually never hear of Jekyll and Hyde, besides in class when you said we were going to read it. I have no idea what it is or what it is about.
I remember going to the city and there was a restaurant. Other than that I never heard it anywhere else.
So I don't know what it is about. I think it must be a really popular book if its an icon here and in the UK.
It’s kind of funny how often I’ve heard the name Jekyll & Hyde, but I honestly have no clue what it’s about. I remember going to the Jekyll & Hyde restaurant in the city when I was little and being scared out of my mind because it was really creepy and scary. I also remember seeing a cartoon of it when I was younger that was about a scientist who was able to turn from good into evil. I guess it’s the same for many pieces of literature and movies that become popular over time. Although people hear about it and can associate it with different aspects of their everyday life they truly might not know the history/meaning behind it.
I watched CSI and there was an episode on this topic. I know it is not a true story but it was a very important and popular story. I think it is about a murder.
i have heard of jekyll and hyde before, it was in the movie league of extrodenary gentle men, but the movie has absolutely no relation to the story.
I have heard these names in the past but, I really never knew what the story line was behind it. I have heard of the Jekyll and Hyde restaurant in the city and that's about it. People have told me it was scary and thrilling at the same times. I am unfamiliar with the actual story line. Jekyll and Hyde has become a cultural icon because many school have Jekyll and Hyde in their curriculum.

I have head this name before as a resterant, and in a cartoon but never knew what it ment. It might be the reason that Jekyll and Hyde emerge because it might be the two sides of a person in there bodey. Thats all i know about it and cant wait to read it.
To be completely honest, I have never come accross even the title "Jeckyll and Hyde". Thus, I'm excited to begin reading and to learn more about the story.

I remember watching some parts of a movie version of Jekyll & Hyde when I was younger with my older brother and father. I didn’t really understand what was going on though. All I really got out of it was that it dealt with a scientist and there was some type of transformation going on. Like many other classmates, I remember watching the Pagemaster and the specific episode of Arthur. I actually went to the restaurant in the city three weeks ago. I think the entertainment and sights in the restaurant helped me understand the story a little bit better. My brother has a Jekyll and Hyde mug with two faces (one black, one white) and it says “In each of us, two natures are at war - the good and the evil. – Dr Henry Jekyll”. I am guessing this is an important quote that relates to a specific them in the novel. I think Jekyll & Hyde has emerged as a cultural icon both here and in its native UK because the story itself has an important meaning that is common in society and the story is unique and well written. I look forward to reading the book too.

I heard of Jekyll & Hyde when I was little because, I remember my parents going to go see the play. Its also been brought up many times in my life.I think the reason why Jekyll & Hyde are cultural icons is because, most people have either read the book in school or at some point during the life. It is a well liked book and considered a classic making it an icon.
I have heard these names in many chartoons. Like scooby doo. I remember this when I used to watch it with my dad. I have also heard these names in movies too.
My friends and I were recently talking about where we wanted to go out for lunch if we went to the city. Jekyll and Hide was one of our choice, and definitely somewhere we'd all like to go. Other than the restaurant and Broadway, I haven't heard the name come up much...I don't watch a lot of TV shows. I think this is the case that it's so popular because it's a good book. Although I haven't read it and I know nothing about it, it must be a book that many people can relate to. I also predict that it will teach us, as human beings, something very valuable in life. Or maybe it's just a funny book, and that's why people enjoy it so much. Like I said, I haven't read it yet so I'm not sure, but I can't wait to find out! [:
The only time I have heard Jeckyll and Hyde was in the Arther episode when I was little. I remember I would sing the song. Maybe it is a cultural icon in many places becuase it was a popular book for many years.
I have heard these names when i went to the city, i ate at the Jekyll and Hyde restaurant. This might be the case that a lot of people have heard of the story of Jekyll & Hyde because it was a good book.
I honestly don't know much about Jekyll and Hyde but I heard that it is associated with opposite personalities of one person and them being conflicted with who they are. A long time ago I think this name was mentioned in an episode of Scooby Doo. I think that Jekyll and Hyde is popular to this day because anyone in the world can relate to it and it has alot of depth to the novel.

To be completely honest I have never heard of this before you mentioned it to us in class. But, I believe that it has been mentioned everywhere because so much of it relates to where it has been mentioned.

i havn't really heard either of these names before reading the book. One of the characters in the TV show "That 70s Show" is named Hyde, but i dont think it has anything to do with the book. I think that Jekyll and Hyde is still read till this day and all over the world because the book is the first of its kind and very unique.
I have heard the names Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde in many places including the restaurant and many TV shows and movies. One of these movies is Abbott and Costello Meet Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. I think that Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde is so popular because of what the story is about and what each character represents: Dr.Jekyll as the good in a person and Mr.Hyde as the evil in a person
I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde but I have never read the book. From what I remember it is about a man who turns from good to evil. I also heard it on an episode of Arthur as a kid, but I don't know what the real book is about.
I heard of the restaurant Jekyll and Hyde but i'm not familiar with the story. Everyone associates Jekyll and Hyde as a mystery or a murder mystery. The book is probably a cultural icon because many people have read it and it's taught in a lot of schools.
I heard it in my health class. My teacher was talking about how we need sleep to function and she said that if we didn’t get sleep we would look like Mr. Hyde from Jekyll & Hyde.
I remember hearing of Jekyll and Hyde before from a resturant in Manhattan but I have never been there. It is a cultural icon probably because it is a very famous story that has stood the test of time. It has not become meaningless to us because most people can still relate to it today.
I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde before in some TV shows and movies, but I never really knew about the book. I think that many people hear the names so often because it is a very famous piece of literature. It makes more sense to refer to something well-known rather than something unheard of. It helps people connect more.
I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde many times throughout my life. Almost every year my family and I go to the restaurant in New York City. When I was younger, between the ages of 5 and 8, I remember going to the resaurant and being rediculously scared. Once I got a little older my parents told me it was all based on a mystery. I saw an episode of Arthur based on Jekyll and Hyde which I find funny now due to the fact that this story would be over a young child's head. That is really the extent of my knowledge of the story though.
This might be because if the fact that the story is a mystery and that it is a catchy name and something that everybody knows
The idea of Jekyll and Hyde is really popular because of the concept of the characters. The idea of a nice man becoming a vicious killer is used in many situations.
I never heard of Jekyll and Hyde.
I think this story is important and it's a mystery which many people like to read.
I had heard of the names Jekyll and Hyde when someone mentioned the restaurant in the city and also in the children's show Arthur, there's a song about Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll and Hyde has emerged as a cultural icon probably because it's so different and unique from other books written during that time period.
I have heard these names in the past but I never knew what the story was behind it. I have heard of the Jekyll and Hyde restaurant in the city and I also heard these names in many cartoons.

The only time that I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde was when I had saw a tv clip that was on the reasturant Jekyll and Hyde. I asume that this was based on the book cause it was a very dark glummy old fashion place that really didnt make any sense
I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde since I was younger. I used to watch shows that would refer to it or even have scenes. I remember the bugs bunny episode but barley. More recently I saw a scene with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the movie Van helsing. I think Jekyll and Hyde shows up in society because first of all it was a popular book and I think that everyone has a angry and dark side to them.
I've heard of these names from my 2 older sisters and also my parents. It's one of my sister's favorite books and she would always talk to me about when she was home. I also have heard of this from both the restaurant and the Arthur episode that i watched when i was younger. I would always sing that song that they featured in the episode. I think this book is used so often, in shows and extc. , because it is a classic piece of literature and it is read by many in school.
I have heard the names Jekyll and Hyde many times in the past. When my brother's moods changed very quickly, they would call him Jekyll and Hyde. I heard it a lot on TV shows when I was little. Also, I have seen the Jekyll and Hyde restaurant in the city many times before. I think it is a cultural icon because many people have heard of or read the book, so they can relate to it.
I had heard of jekyll and hyde when i was younger. But i heard of it most recently in the movie A League of Extraordinary Men.

I had heard about Jekyll and Hyde when I was younger I guess. I remembered it had something to do with a scientist changing into a sort of villain. I had never known there was a Jekyll and Hyde restaurant in the city. I guess I'll have to look it up.
I have heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because I grew up in a home of its native. I read children versions and seen a lot of the movies. Me and my friends want to go to the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde restaurant the next time we go to the city. I think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde became so known is because for it's time it was so original.
I had heard about Jekyll and Hyde when I was little but I wasn't sure what it was except that it was a man who looked normal at times but could turn into a monster
I have heard Jekyll and Hyde from the restaurant in the city. All i knew about it was that it was that it was a creepy story or kind of a horror story. It is a cultural icon I think because many people have read the book and associate it with a thriller story.
I have only heard of Jekyll and Hyde a few times in my life. When i was little, I remember hearing two people at the store talking about it. Just the other day, I heard the owner at the diner in Smithtown talking about Jekyll and Hyde. I think it has become such a cultural icon because it's so unique and well-known.
I first heard these names when I went to the restaurant in Manhattan quite some time ago. Also, a possible reason why Jekyll and Hyde has emerged as a cultural icon is because of the quality and popularity of the content that the people who are responsible for the production of the material has given to the audience.

Before I read this book, I only heard of Jekyll & Hyde from the resturant in the city. I aways knew it as some crepy weird looking guy. I think its a cultural icon because its well known.

i heard jekyll and hyde names before in a restaurant in Manhattan. I believe its an important icon now because mostly everyone knows about Jekll and hyde and knows the story behind it.
Other than Jedi Gunsel's class I really haven't read or heard of Jekyll and Hyde, but I think I under stand about why that name is important. I think people remember these names because its a generation thing, in the sense that our parents and our parents parents have read it when they were kids, and now its revolutionize to our modern society.
I have heard of these names from the Arthur episode that had shown what Jekyll and Hyde really is. This book is famous in all different ways around the world and is very important.
I've heard of Jekyll and Hyde before from previous teachers making references to them during lessons. They use the theme of good vs evil to support their statements. This is most likely more pupular in the United Kingdom because that is where the book originated.
Kyle O.
I have seen Jekyll and Hyde in so many different movies. In many of these movies Hyde is not a man but a monster who cannot be tamed. He is a larger, stronger, and faster human being who is a killer and lives by no law. I think this is the case because jekyll and Hyde is based on a concept which had a great story put around it. People can manipulate this story how they like to bring out any type of messege they'd like to based on Stevenson's original story and concept. Its a icon here because it is a huge concept. The evil inside of people which connects to so many pieces of literature and film is able to make Jekyll and Hyde a almost undoubtly known novel.
I heard Jekyll & Hyde before from when I went to the restaurant in the city. I didn't really know anything about it except that some could change appearances. I think a lot of people know about it due to the restaurant and then their parents explaining it to the kids.
I have never heard of Jekyll and Hyde before we read the story. The only thing that helped me predict the story was when Jen played us the video of Aurthor. This might be the case because it is a really good story and has been read and enjoyed since the 1880's.
Ya, I've heard of the name Jekyll & Hyde before, don't know from where, probably because it is in many cartoons and because it is a restaurant.
i have never heard of jekyll and hyde before until we read the book in class. ive seen cartoons that have had a similar relation the the theme of the book.
I have never heard of Jekyll and Hyde untill we have read this book in class. Ive never seen cartoons that have had relation of this book or theme of this book.
I have heard of Jekyll and Hyde from Abbot and Costello. My Grandpa showed me it a long, long time ago when I was at least four years old. They took it from the book because it was such a great story back then and still is even today.
I had never really heard of any other references to Jekyll and Hyde other than the resturaunt in New York City and, of course, the book itself. It being a wide spread cultural icon may be because of the way this stroy focuses on the mysteries in life that almost anyone could relate to.
I would hear the name Jekyll & Hyde in funny cartoons and the TV shows I could call classic. I think when someone actually referee’s to the Jekyll & Hyde they are a rare breed. I feel if not for Jekyll & Hyde the theme of older movies wouldn’t have been about true evil but about some other risky topic. As a matter of fact maybe why the story is native United Kingdom is cause of cultural differences.
